Yowza. It’s been a while.
In Class:
Discussion of Griffin.
What are her themes/threads?
What is the significance of these themes? What other images/themes/metaphors would work as well and how?
Although it’s easy to identify what “Our Secret” is about, identifying purpose (thesis) might be a bit more difficult. What do you think her thesis, and how would you support your claim?
Do you think that writing “Our Secret” more traditionally would be as effective? Why or why not?
Why do you think she writes in this manner?
What can her writing style teach us about writing– academic writing specifically?

Sorry to do this, but have bronchitis and am under orders.
For those who wish, you have a built-in extension on submitting chapter 2 until Monday’s class. For those who don’t wish, leave your chapter with draft and workshop commentary in my mailbox in Engleman D236.
As we are not meeting tonight, please make sure that you review the “lost” pages of Freire and read the two sections of Griffin (available through electronic course reserve via consuls.org).
Consider the previous texts we have read– McCormick, Waller and Flower, Hornby, Lessig, and Freire– as being in conversation with each other. Now Griffin’s entering the conversation. How might “Our Secret” be a response to repertoires? To Hornby’s emblems and themes? To Freire’s concepts of ‘Banking’ and ‘problem-posing’? If writing is a form of teaching, what is Griffin teaching and how? Are her methods effective? How are they different from the “normal” methods of teaching? What do you think she is teaching?
Please keep up with all assignments on syllabus. Email me if you have questions.
