Laptop lab rules
As this is a laptop lab, we have to follow a certain protocol:
- Bring your ID with you to each class
- Make sure you keep your passwords current for MySCSU and Windows login
- No food or drink with laptops (it makes for very expensive coasters)
- When getting a laptop, place your ID in the sleeve alongside the laptop you will be using, unplug the laptop (they’re charging), and carry with BOTH HANDS to your desk
- Keep laptops on clean, flat surfaces (PLEASE!). This means on a desk, not (despite the name) on your lap, draped across your legs, or teetering atop some unstable surface.
- When finished, check to remove any disks or thumb drives.
- Shut DOWN computer and WAIT for it to power down (you have to read the screen carefully, as you need to select “shut down” twice)
- Place laptop back in its shelf “home” (the number on the laptop corresponds to the numbered space).
- Make sure that the laptop number is facing out
- Plug it in so that it charges
- Don’t forget your ID!
Extra batteries are available at the bottom of the computer cabinet (they’re charging, too). System needs to be powered off to change battery.
You can “hot swap” (meaning while the computer is on) the drives in the laptop (from disk drives to cd/dvd). If you're not sure how to do this, ask.
- BRING A DISK (CD RW, DVD-RW, or USB "Jump" drive), and HAVE ANOTHER FOR BACKING UP INFORMATION (my rule). As we will be workshopping and drafting some work in class, it is expected that you provide a way to store and backup your data. If one disk becomes corrupted, you should have a backup.
- Did you know? You have online storage space available via your "U" Drive (for campus access upon logging in to a University computer) or via http://remote.southernct.edu
- LOSE YOUR DISK? Check the home for lost disks (in B306, the pumpkin).
